Black soldier fly on finger

Our story

In 2017, Jason Kiem and Jesse Turkstra were on a mission to discover sustainable innovations in the agriculture industry. It was during this quest that they met the third founder of InsectoCycle, Seppe Salari. Seppe was experimenting with growing black soldier flies at home. Inspired by Seppe’s passion, the three of them decided to combine their unique skills and backgrounds to establish InsectoCycle.

Our mission at InsectoCycle is to promote sustainability by enabling large-scale production of black soldier flies. We achieve this by providing turnkey reproduction systems to our customers, who in turn can use BSF products to make the world a more sustainable place.

InsectoCycle research facility

In 2018, InsectoCycle applied for an European grant to establish a research and development facility. We were successful in our grant application and in September 2019, our research facility, FeedBackFarm, was officially opened.

FeedBackFarm is equipped with state-of-the-art climate control chambers, a feed production plant, a processing line, and a lab for in-house analysis. This advanced setup allows us to accommodate a wide range of research needs and enables us to further develop our expertise in fly rearing and feedstock optimization.

Large scale egg production

In 2020, we recognized a gap in the market for technologies that could facilitate large-scale egg production for black soldier flies. Determined to fill this need, we set out to develop a solution and created our first prototype for the InsectoCage. In 2021, after rigorous testing and fine-tuning, our proof of concept was ready and we filed for a patent to protect our innovative design. With this technology, we aim to make it more efficient and sustainable to produce eggs at large scale.

In 2022, we were proud to introduce our 4m3 and 24m3 InsectoCage to the market. These state-of-the-art technologies have been well received by customers around the world. The InsectoCage allows for large scale, efficient, and sustainable egg production for black soldier flies. We are thrilled to be a part of the growing industry of sustainable food production.
